Our parents came to the U.S/Canada because they wanted a better life- not to marry their children to white ppl. It seems as if you might think that`s the same thing.
So what if we live in a "western world"? Freedom of choice doesn`t mean forgetting your culture... people want to marry within their race to further engage themselves and their families in their cultures. Just because we move to the U.S/Canada/U.K doesn`t mean we should just forget our unique identities to pick up the generic, "white," interests and traditions. Yeah, freedom of choice means you get to choose who you marry... but it also means you have the right to choose if you want to have premarital sex, get an abortion, cheat on your spouse, neglect your kids, do drugs, or choose even the color of your car, your house, what you want to eat, etc. So what it comes down to is not that you have the choice, but what you exercise it.
You raise no issue of sustaining your culture. We live in America, which has American trends and a unique culture of its own. Who says you can`t incorporate "American" trends into your life? We`ve all already done it by going to American schools, shopping at malls and stores like Macy`s, Nordstrom, JCPenneys, Dillards,etc; eating at McDonald`s, Taco Bell, and Burger King; holding jobs here, taking the SATs and other standardized exams, eating hamburgers and hot dogs, playing and watching football, etc. That doesn`t mean everyone who lives here has to take it to the extreme and marry "white" people, who are no more legally American than us.
You expressed skepticism toward parent`s knowledge....how do we know what they say is right? Simply because they came here for a better life for you 10, 15, 20 years ago... maybe sacrificed a great portion of their lives solely for your well-being and future.... so why the hell would they now tell you misleading, calculated things that would impose a threat to your happiness? Why would they be so selfish in only thinking only about their own happiness?
Furthermore, the U.S and Canada consist of people from a myriad of ethnicities and they still practice their customs because they in fact do have that freedom of choice.
And why do so many people think that if Indian girls/boys want to marry within their race it`s only because their parents have "brainwashed" them into it. Myself and many others, who have lived in North America for most/all of our lives, know we have a choice and choose our futures according to what we want and what we think is best for us, which happens to suit our parent`s wishes as well.
Lastly, why worry about those who plan to get married to, or have already married, within their race only because their parents want them to? Who gives a damn... why waste time arguing for someone who won`t fight for himself?
