Re: Re: Re: JUDGING AT BRUIN - Listen up
Fudubudu and all of you expecting traditionality, are you out of your minds? I guess you must not have been watching the scene for the last I dont know, 10 YEARS? Bruin is not and never has been about traditionality. For better or worse, its about presentation, energy, synchronization and yes ENTERTAINMENT. Look at the judging scoresheet.
Think of this. When partition happened, a bunch of folk dances stopped being folk dances and becamed choreographed and standardized, subsumed under this category of `bhangra.` Guess what? That was a move away from how those dances were performed traditionally. A lot of the moves you think are hundreds of years old and involve farming etc., just are not. They are constructions of the last 50 years as people tried to unite under folk dance. If that was the case, a whole bunch of bhangra that is seen in the Indian side of Punjab would be seen in Pakistan. Traditional jhumar looks nothing like choreographed jhumar. Folk dance isn`t about keeping a certain cannon of moves, its about having a good time and the personal meaning. So quit bashing teams and thinking you`re maintaining some sort of cultural purity. That`s not to say that anything should go in and be called `bhangra` just because its danced to a dhol either, but you can`t be so rigid. I mean half of these OMGG TRADITIONALITYYY ppl revere nachdi jawani for what they did at vibc, but notice that their jhumar was so aggressive that it goes against the literal meaning of the word...
