Islam is a diverse religion with a multitude of interpretations throughout time. Islam can be extremely open, expansive and universalist (like most of the great Muslim Punjabi poets showed), but also very exclusivist, literalist and fundamentalist. This isn`t a Muslim issue though, it`s related to all religions. All religions show both the beauty and the ugliness of reality. I wonder where God is in all this? I would say God for me is in the beauty of Islam.
There is a saying of the Prophet, "God is beautiful and loves beauty." For me this is Islam, nothing else. If someone spreads hate and injustice, then this is not Islam in my mind. Life is about self definition, and I define Islam in this way.
I choose to follow the beautiful Islam of our heritage (Mouiddin Chishti, Baba Farid Ganji Shakr, Lala Shabaz Qalandar, Bulleh Shah, Nizamuddin Awliya etc) All of them were more knowledgable of this religion than any of these modern figures who spread their negative and uneducated version of Islam. I`d rather follow those traditional ones who believed in peace.
