At a young age, Ajay Kataria was trained in not only Bhangra, but also learned and performed Jhummar all throughout the late 1980`s into the early 1990`s. At New York University, Ajay was instrumental in starting the Bhangra club and Team in 2001 and became the President, Captain, and Choreographer through 2002 and 2003. Most recently, he has performed with the cast of Bombay Dreams, the Broadway musical in Cleveland, Ohio for a corporate event. Currently Ajay has been learning Dhol for about 7 years. He has studied under many local NY teachers, including Madan Madi. One of his most prized accomplishments on Dhol has been that he has been recorded on a soon to be released track by international superstar Sukhbir and Chicago based R&B fusion Indian singer Reggie Benjamin. His knowledge of Bhangra and Dhol stems from his thorough study of the Punjabi folk dances and music. Through reading books and watching videos, he has gained a good understanding of the Punjabi folk dances on their own pre-1947, and their development after the 1947 split of Punjab. He has organized 2 large seminars for Punjabi Lok Virsa in New York and Philadelphia dealing with Bhangra (pre and post 1947) as well as Men`s and Womens Giddha. Ajay has competed and judged competitions all throughout the country and has been an instrumental figure in the Bhangra scene of Philadelphia and New York City for numerous years now.
