| Bhangra Blowout |
The very first Bhangra Blowout was held in the cafeteria of The George Washington University in 1994. From a local dance show held in a campus cafeteria, Bhangra Blowout now hosts ten teams from all over the world in the most esteemed venues in the heart of the nations capital. A Washington, DC springtime tradition, Bhangra Blowout is proud of over a decade of excellence. The South Asian Society of the George Washington University is a not-for-profit organization that was established to maintain and promote South Asian culture in the community. In addition to hosting Bhangra Blowout, the SAS also organizes other cultural celebrations like Raas Chaos, an intercollegiate garba/raas competition; Spin The Globe, a multi-cultural winter show; and various panel discussions with professors and experts throughout the community. The SAS also participates in community service projects like National Gandhi Day of Service, and various food drives throughout the year. Over the years Bhangra Blowout has had immeasurable success within the South Asian community. It has grown from a local talent show to an elite platform to display the worlds finest exhibits of student talents. Bhangra Blowout seeks to preserve and spread the essence, the spirit and the traditions of all aspects of such Punjabi folk dances as bhangra. We use the term bhangra inclusively of other traditional Punjabi folk dances like giddha and jhumar. With each passing year we celebrate with larger, more supportive audiences as we inch closer towards the roots of our culture. We are continuously surprised and gratified by the extreme efforts and level of excellence in the performances that the Bhangra Blowout teams showcase each year. |
